The documenation for the system was very good, and the whole setup had clearly been prepared by someone who knew what they were doing

Rare stuff ! Documentation is the last thing on the agenda, generally.

and it’s always possible the brain surgeon might have forgotten how to deal with a nose-bleed.

Amardeep,

The documenation for the system was very good, and the whole setup had clearly been prepared by someone who knew what they were doing, so I suggested they go back to the company that had originally created the system for them and get them involved.

(The amount and type of work meant that I wasn't the right person for the job - it would have been a bit like getting a brain surgeon to man the first-aid post at an open-air concert ... and it's always possible the brain surgeon might have forgotten how to deal with a nose-bleed. ;)

Amardeep,

I don't think I've seen a v5 in production for at least 10 years. It was running under Xenix, supporting an application written in Forms 2.0.
I was called in to see if I could do anything to port it to a newer machine because "the hard drive has started to make funny noises".

I haven't seen one running 6 too. The oldest version I have seen is 7. Something to do with being little young, I think :D

Should the need arise, V5 upgrades require reloading the data. EXP/IMP should work, but it may be faster to use sqlplus copy via sqlnet. If you opt for sqlplus copy, be sure to set the session's long to at least as long as the longest long you wish to copy. Likely you're get better results connect from V6 to V5 and pulling the data into the V6 database. That will get you to v6 and you can follow Oracle's advice from there.
