Table rebuilds

Here’s a question from the OTN forum that I’ve seen fairly frequently in the last couple of years:

I have a table abc(c_date date, c_id varchr2(20), c_name varchar2);
The table is already range partitoned on “c_date” column and I have lot of data in that table.
Now my task is to create the hash partions under range; hash partiton needs 16 partitons.
I dont want to create another table with range and hash partitons and migrate the data. The amount of data I have is 3 terabytes.

Upgrade Argh

Flash Cache

Have you ever heard the suggestion that if you see time lost on event write complete waits you need to get some faster discs.
So what’s the next move when you’ve got 96GB of flash cache plugged into your server (check the parameters below) and see time lost on event write complete waits: flash cache ?

NULL

A recent question from OTN:

What’s the difference between “{expression} is null” and “{expression}= null” ?

Technically we can say the following:

  • {expression} is null will evaluate to one of TRUE or FALSE
  • {expression} = null will evaluate to NULL

As a follow on from this: a predicate is satisfied if (and only if) it evaluates to TRUE; a constraint is satisfied if (and only if) it doesn’t evaluate to FALSE.

Three-valued logic catches everybody out occasionally.

System Stats

A quick collation – and warning – for 11.2

Bottom line – be careful about what you do with system stats on 11.2

Footnote: the MOS link is a search string  producing a list of references. I set it up like that because one of the articles referencing the bug is called “Things to consider before upgrade to 11.2.0.2″ and it’s worth reading.

Addendum: one of the people on the two-day course I’ve just run in Berlin sent me a link for a quick note on how to set your own values for the system stats if you hit this bug. It’s actually quite a reasonable thing to do whether or not you hit the bug given the way that gathering the stats can produce unsuitable figures anyway:  setting system stats. (I’ve also added their company blog to the links on the right, they have a number interesting items and post fairly regularly.)

Row Lock Waits

Here’s one I keep forgetting – and spending 15 minutes trying to think of the answer before getting to the “deja vu” point again. I’ve finally decided that I’ve got to write the answer down because that will save me about 14 minutes the next time I forget.

Q. In a Statspack or AWR report there is a section titles “Segments by Row Lock Waits”. Why could an index be subject to a Row Lock Wait ?

A. Try inserting into a table from two different sessions (without committing) two rows with the same primary key. The second insert will wait on event enq: TX – row lock contention, and show up in v$lock with a lock request for a TX lock in mode 4. When you issue a commit or rollback on the first session, and the second statement errors or completes (depending on whether you commit or rollback the first session) it will increase the value for row lock waits in v$segstat (and v$segment_statistics) for the index by 1.

There are variations on the theme, of course, but the key feature is uniqueness with one session waiting for another session to commit or rollback on a conflicting value. This includes cases of foreign key constraint checking such as inserting a child for a parent that has been deleted but not committed (and there’s an interesting anomaly with that scenario which – in 10g, at least – reports more row lock waits on the parent PK than you might expect.)

used_urec

A question that comes up from time to time on the OTN forums is the one about how much undo do you generate when you insert or update a row. It’s not a question that has an immediate answer – it depends on what you’re actually doing, the amount of change you introduce, and the number of indexes affected. However, there are a few guidelines that will point you in the right direction – and the key is to keep an eye on the used_urec and used_ublk colummns from v$transactions.

Consider the example of inserting data: when you insert a row, you typically generate one undo record (used_urec) for the row, but when you insert many rows using an array insert Oracle has an optimisation mechanism on undo record creation that allows it to create one used_urec to cover all the changes you have made simultaneously to an individual block - so used_urec could be much smaller than the number of rows processed.

However, if you have indexes in place and are doing normal index maintenance on import, then each table row would require each index to be updated, so you would go back to one used_urec per table row plus one used_urec per index maintained per table row.

So, when you look at the “big picture” there’s no obvious correlation between rows inserted and undo generated — until you look at the fine detail of exactly what you’re doing, and whether any optimisations apply. (The details of the optimisation strategies available vary with the chosen insert mechanisms and with version of Oracle)
